IPEX expands its line of venting systems for gas-fired appliances with new System 636 Common Venting Solution

Common venting simplifies multiple appliance installations, saving time and reducing installation complexity.

OAKVILLE, ON, CANADA, NOVEMBER 7, 2024 – IPEX by Aliaxis, a leading manufacturer of thermoplastic piping systems, now offers Canadian customers a complete flue gas venting system for with the addition of the new System 636 Common Venting System.

Common venting allows the cascading of multiple gas-fired appliances (typically boilers and water heaters of the same brand and model) to achieve installation efficiencies while sharing a single exhaust vent and fresh-air intake. This configuration reduces the number of vent terminations to two, enhancing aesthetics and saving space.

Like System 636®, the IPEX Common Venting System is designed for both negative- and positive-pressure gas-fired condensing appliances, provided that the appliance manufacturer has approved its equipment for common venting. Depending on the temperature requirement, the System 636 Common Venting System is available in PVC for exhaust temperatures up to 65ºC, and in CPVC up to 90ºC in diameters ranging up to 12 inches.

In addition to the vent pipe, this system includes specialized fittings, such as an engineered backflow valve and a cleanout condensate drain, as well as versatile options like reducing wyes and double reducing wyes to cater to the dynamic requirements of modern gas-fired appliance installations.

The System 636 Common Venting system fully complies with the CSA B149.1 Natural Gas and Propane Installation Code, which now permits common venting. System 636 is permitted to be used in noncombustible building applications, as specified in clause 3.1.5.16 of the Canadian National Building Code (NBC), and in buildings deemed high-rise, as per NBC article 3.2.6 for System 636 CPVC.

Key Features of the IPEX System 636 Common Venting Solution

Backflow Valve: This industry-first engineered PVC and CPVC backflow valve is certified to ULC S636. Its built-in damper is designed to prevent the flue gas generated by active appliances sharing the exhaust vent from escaping through an appliance that may be idling or under maintenance. The valve is installed on the exhaust vent of each appliance, as required by CSA B149.1, and is available in 4 inches.

  • In-line condensate drain requires no priming to operate.
  • Cleanout provides access to inspect the damper to ensure there are no debris or blockages during the commissioning stage.

Cleanout Condensate Drain:
The System 636 Cleanout Condensate Drain is an engineered fitting designed to be installed at the end of the exhaust manifold, effectively allowing any accumulation of condensate or rain to drain. The Cleanout Condensate Drain is available in sizes ranging from 6 to 12 inches in both PVC and CPVC and includes the following features:

  • Self-Draining ball check style condensate drain requires no priming of the drain line to operate.
  • Cleanout provides access to inspect the exhaust vent to ensure there are no debris or blockages during the commissioning stage.

“With the introduction of our System 636 Common Venting System, we are pleased to provide our customers with a complete gas venting solution,” says Johnathan Subramaniam, P.Eng., IPEX Product Specialist – Flue Gas Venting.

“The ability to common-vent will reduce installation costs and overcome any clearance termination obstacles, helping to ensure a seamless installation experience.”
